Appalachian Strong: Mental Wellness for Families and Youth

About the Course

This interactive workshop is designed for social workers, behavioral health staff, intervention specialists, school counselors, and therapists working with Appalachian families and youth.  We recognize the unique challenges and strengths of Appalachian communities and are committed to empowering families to cultivate mental wellness. This workshop will provide concrete strategies and actionable steps for promoting emotional, social, and psychological well-being within families and youth.  Rooted in the rich history and resilient spirit of Appalachia, "Appalachian Strong" will equip participants with the practical tools to support the mental well-being of the families and youth they serve. Through a combination of presentations, group discussions, and interactive activities, we will explore the interconnectedness of mental wellness and build a stronger, more resilient future for Appalachian communities.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will define mental wellness in the context of Appalachian culture and identify the key components of emotional, social, and psychological well-being for both youth and families.
2. Participants will gain an understanding of how historical and socioeconomic factors affect mental well-being in their communities.
3. Participants will acquire practical strategies for fostering positive emotional regulation skills in youth and families. This includes developing and applying effective communication techniques, conflict resolution strategies, and practical skills in recognizing and managing stress responses. They will also learn how to encourage healthy coping mechanisms and promote a culture of support within families and communities.
4. Participants will develop actionable plans for integrating the principles of mental wellness into their professional practice. This will include outlining specific steps to promote mental well-being in their clients and communities, tailored to the unique needs of Appalachian youth and families. Participants will leave equipped to identify and respond to mental health needs within their roles and create positive change in service delivery.
