Facing the '-isms' in Your System

About the Course

"-Isms" are the systems that divide us by race, sex, appearance, ability, age, origin, or who we love. They damage co-worker relationships, undermine organizational goals, and erode trust with clients and the community. Even neutral-seeming policies and procedures can create an atmosphere where people are hurt. This workshop challenges participants to assess how their own organization's policies, processes, and procedures might perpetuate an "-ism," and gives them tools to evaluate those systems without falling into shame, blame, or guilt.

Learning Objectives

1. Define the "-isms" that threaten diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizations and agencies.
2. Explain the cost of "-isms" for the people affected and for the organization and its mission.
3. Use strategies to build cultural proficiency into workplace policies, processes, and procedures.
