Fathers, Inequity, and Ethics in Child Welfare

About the Course

This session explores the critical role of fathers in child welfare and examines how inequity, bias, and ethical decision-making can impact paternal engagement. Participants will examine common assumptions and systemic barriers that often exclude or minimize fathers, and how these practices can affect children’s safety, permanency, and well-being. The session emphasizes ethical responsibilities, cultural humility, and equitable practice when working with fathers from diverse backgrounds. Participants will learn how personal beliefs, institutional norms, and unintentional bias influence decision-making, and how to apply ethical frameworks to support fair treatment and meaningful father involvement. Through reflection and practical strategies, the session promotes inclusive, ethical approaches that strengthen family connections and improve outcomes for children.
