About the Course
Every foster parent, caregiver, and caseworker will, at some point, care for a child or youth who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, gender nonconforming, Two-Spirit, or intersex (LGBTQI+). This foundational course builds the understanding, self-awareness, and affirming communication skills every caregiver needs, regardless of the specific youth or situation they're working with. Participants will examine their own beliefs about LGBTQI+ identity, learn the fundamentals of healthy sexual and gender identity development, and build the vocabulary and mindset to make every child and youth feel loved, seen, and supported.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe typical patterns of sexual and gender identity development in children and youth.
- Recognize personal beliefs and biases about LGBTQI+ individuals that may affect their caregiving.
- Explain the diverse experiences and needs of LGBTQI+ youth within the broader landscape of identity and diversity.
- Apply affirming communication strategies that support youth as they explore and express their identity.
- Identify school and community advocacy strategies and support resources available to LGBTQI+ youth and their caregivers.
