About the Course
This course looks at the impact of various "-isms" (e.g. racism, sexism, or ableism) on the people served within the helping professions. This course provides a powerful framework for understanding the impact of these "-isms" reducing the perpetuation of "-isms" in our work and finally, creating safe spaces for expression for those we serve.
Learning Objectives
1. Participants will understand and discuss why recognizing "-isms" is important in the helping professions.
2. Participants will learn risk factors associated with various "-isms" and discuss how they impact those we serve.
3. Participants will develop strategies to create a safe space for those we serve to express themselves and to learn how to engage with others based on their cultural expressions.
