About the Course
This course looks at the impact of various "-isms" (e.g. racism, sexism, or ableism) on young people. It provides a powerful framework for understanding the impact of these "-isms" reducing the perpetuation of "-isms" in our work with young people and finally, creating safe spaces for expression for young people.
Learning Objectives
1. Participants will understand and discuss why recognizing "-isms" is important in the helping professions.
2. Participants will learn risk factors associated with various "-isms" and discuss their particular impact on young people.
3. Participants will develop strategies to create a safe space for young people to express themselves and to learn how to engage with youth based on their cultural expressions.
